LA VISIÓN DE LA CEGUERA
“Yo llevo la luz para que los demás no choquen” dice Jose María, ciego hace 68 años. Nos hicimos amigos hace cuatro cuando una tarde accedió a que lo retratara. Nuestras conversaciones nos llevaron a los profetas, a los versos de Borges, a las complejidades de vivir en una sociedad que privilegia la visión. Su ceguera, es la materia prima de este proyecto que nace en la fusión del personaje con lo onírico a través de la puesta en escena y explora la posibilidad de lo fantástico en un hombre excluido del mundo de las apariencias y de sus distracciones superfluas, un hombre que no opera a la velocidad de nuestros días pero que se obstina a quedarse quieto, a sentirse excluido, a caer en el cliché del inválido. Un hombre que escapa constantemente del encierro inminente y convierte su ceguera en un don para explorar el mundo.
Este trabajo es además, un intento por construir un nuevo imaginario y proponer una narrativa que busca reflexionar sobre los estereotipos asumidos alrededor de la cultura afrodescendiente de mi país, (Colombia) visibilizando un personaje que nos ayuda a comprender y reconocer, otra historia de la afrodescendencia en américa latina.
vision of blindness
“I carry the light so that the rest don’t collide,” says José María, blind sixty-eight years ago. We became friends in an afternoon four years ago when he agreed that I take his picture. Our conversations took us to the prophets, to the verses of Borges, to the complexities of living in a society that privileges vision. His blindness is the raw material of this project which is brought to life in the fusion of the character with the oniric [world] through staging. The series explores the possibilities of the fantastic in a man excluded from the world of appearances and superfluous distractions, a man who does not operate at the speed of our days but who is obstinate in remaining still, to feel excluded, to fall under the disabled person cliché. A man who constantly escapes the immanent confinement and turns his blindness into a gift to explore the world and become the guide in a journey where photography is the light that brings forth the character from the darkness.
This work is also an attempt to build a new imaginary and propose a narrative that seeks to reflect on the stereotypes assumed around the Afro-descendant culture of my country, (Colombia), making visible a character that helps us understand and recognize, another story of the Afrodescendence in Latin America.
